tips for hiking in the spring

As the days begin to warm up, you are probably planning some outdoor activities. Hiking, in particular, is a wonderful activity to pursue in the spring as nature seems to wake up from the long winter. There are flowers, birds, and butterflies everywhere. Who wouldn’t want to explore all the beautiful scenery? If you are interested in going hiking this spring, there are some tips that 98.5 The Sports Hub suggests to help you better prepare for your first hike.

Start Small

Whether you are new to hiking or this is your first hike of the season, it is always a good idea to start small. Do not feel like you have to hike the hardest or longest trail. You do not even have to complete the entire trail. Simply work your way up by opting for a trail that is fit for beginners or amateurs. If you overexert yourself, it could cause you to hurt or tire yourself to the point where you are discouraged from hiking in the future. Help yourself by starting your hiking adventures small.

Stretch First

After you have planned which beginner’s trail you will hike, the next thing you should do before you actually ever step foot on the trail is to stretch. Hopefully, you stretch before you run, take a cycling class, or lift weights, so why would you not stretch before doing any type of physical activity such as hiking? By properly stretching your muscles, you are helping warm them up for the hike, so that injuries can be prevented. When you stretch, focus on your legs, ankles, knees, and even your upper and lower back.

Stay Hydrated

It may not be blazing hot yet, but it is still important to stay hydrated when hiking in the spring. Whether you realize it or not, you are definitely breaking a sweat when you hike. Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water before your hike as well as carrying a water bottle with you on your hike.

Have Proper Footwear

You are on your feet the entire time that you are hiking. If that’s not tiring enough, you are traverse some uneven and rocky terrain. Make sure that you have supportive and comfortable shoes specifically created for hiking so you can stay sure-footed on the trails.

Hike with a Buddy

Of course, the last piece of advice is to hike with a friend. While the idea of hiking solo to clear your mind can sound lovely, it is important to have someone with you on a hike. As much as you prepare, you never know what you could encounter or what could happen on the trail. One wrong step and you could twist your ankle. Or maybe you accidentally got off the trail and have lost your way. During those times, you will be glad that you had a buddy with you on the hike.
