Chill Out With These Cold Drinks

It can be hard to keep cool on these hot summer days. The bright July sun is doing its best to drive the temperatures up, and it is important to find relief wherever you can here in Pensacola. Of course, we cannot all just head to the beach or dip in the pool every time the mercury rises, but it does help to have a cool, refreshing beverage on hand. If an ice-cold drink sounds good to you, try out these easy summer drink recipes to beat the heat!
Agua Fresca
Mexican aguas frescas, which translates to “fresh waters,” are a variety of cool refreshments that derive their flavors from natural ingredients. Many versions of this drink involve fresh fruit, and when you opt for ingredients that are ripe in season, you might find that you do not need to add much sugar at all to achieve your desired level of sweetness. In the summertime, that means that watermelon, papaya, cantaloupe, and pineapple would all be excellent choices for your agua fresca.
Measurements can vary depending on the fruit you choose, but to make an agua fresca, dice your preferred fruit and load it into a blender along with a couple of cups of water and about ¾ cup of sugar, depending on how sweet the fruit of your choice is. Next, blend it all together until it reaches a smooth consistency. Then, pour the mix into a pitcher, add a cup or two of cold water, add ice, then serve.
Berry Lemonade
How about a tart twist on a classic summer beverage? Lemonade is always a welcome thirst quencher on a sweltering summer day, and while you cannot go wrong with the tried-and-true recipe, adding some extra ingredients for this berry lemonade is a great way to freshen up your cooldown. This recipe’s author suggests using strawberries, while other options like blueberries or raspberries would work well, too.
First, you will need to make a berry syrup, which is just a matter of reducing the berries with two cups of water and a cup of sugar in a saucepan. Let it all come to a boil, then lower it to a simmer. Once the syrup has reduced for about 10 minutes, let it cool for an hour, then strain out any remaining pieces of strawberry. Next, combine the syrup with lemon juice and ice water.
