Is a Power Liftgate Worth It?

Should You Invest in a Power Liftgate?

Most SUVs, hatchbacks, wagons, and minivans have a large cargo area designed to make loading and unloading items easier. However, because of the size of the cargo door, opening and closing it with a manual liftgate can be a hassle. Closing an upward-opening liftgate can be challenging for shorter people because liftgates are heavier than trunk lids.

Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem: power liftgates.

Power liftgates are easier to operate on minivans, hatchbacks, and SUVs. Having one can make owning a vehicle easier. A power liftgate is a convenient option that can be included as standard equipment or as part of an optional package.

What Are Power Liftgates and How Do They Work?

A power liftgate can automatically open your vehicle’s rear door. You can activate the system by pressing a button, using a key fob, or waving your foot under the bumper.

Here are some features of a power liftgate:

Height adjustments are programmable: In cases where overhead clearance is limited, you can adjust the cargo door opening to prevent damage. Alternatively, the liftgate can be programmed to a height that suits you. These settings vary by make and model, so make sure you take a look at the specs.

It is equipped with a lock button: Depending on your vehicle’s system, a lock button may be in the cargo compartment, trunk, or liftgate. This feature allows you to use the liftgate without locking it after closing it.

It’s a hands-free device: In some new systems, backdoors can be opened without buttons or key fobs. Simply wave your foot under the bumper to open the door. You can use this tool when you have a full hand and need to open the cargo door.

Why Is a Power Liftgate A Good Idea?

A power liftgate on a hatchback or SUV makes getting into the trunk convenient. You do not need to put anything down to open the hatch and tailgate.

Consider these benefits when choosing a Toyota vehicle with a power liftgate:

A convenient and easy-to-use interface: By pressing a button, you can open and close your vehicle’s liftgate. With hands-free mode, you can load groceries into your trunk with ease, for example, if your hands are full. Those with mobility or strength challenges can also use the tool to help them access their vehicle’s cargo area.

Value increases at resale: A vehicle with premium features, such as power liftgates, has a higher value, especially if the features are optional. When you sell it or trade it, the price can be higher.

Maintaining safety: The power liftgate makes it easier to close and open cargo doors without straining or injuring yourself. Additionally, the automatic locking mechanism protects your cargo from theft.

Height Adjustment Tips for Power Liftgates

With its adjustable height, the power liftgate won’t hit low ceilings. There is a knob inside the driver’s door or in the overhead console that can be used to adjust the height. Primary settings include a maximum, a 3/4, and an OFF. OFF can be set if you prefer manual opening or closing. In the meantime, setting it to MAX will allow it to open to the maximum height, and 3/4 will open to about three-quarters of that height.

To set the desired height, you must open the liftgate and manually adjust it. Then, hold down the latch button for three seconds to save the setting. After setting, a chime will sound, and the turn signal will flash. The console has an option for adjusting and customizing the height of the power liftgate, but not all trim levels have this option.
